The Great White Tower

 Recently, I watched a Japanese drama called The Great Wall Tower. 

 It was very interesting and intriguing. The drama vividly portrayed the inner workings of an elite university hospital in Japan — doctors’ ambitions, the politics behind the scenes, and the struggles they face daily on the operating table, where life and death hang in the balance.

Among the characters, I particularly liked Dr. Zaizen. He is a skilled surgeon: hardworking, intelligent, and ambitious. While some might see him as the "bad guy," the drama portrayed him as a real, relatable character. In him, I saw the struggles we all experience — the tension between personal ambition and moral compromise. Even when he made foolish mistakes, fell into greed, or was unfaithful to his wife, his genuine love for his mistress was portrayed in a way that was touching and deeply human. I felt sad for him, but more than that, I saw a reflection of the real world. There are many people like Dr. Zaizen around us.

In contrast, Dr. Satomi represents the ideal. He firmly holds onto his beliefs, refuses to meddle with politics, and is willing to sacrifice everything — his family, career, and passion — in order to stand by the truth. While he is admirable, I found him somewhat unreal. People like Dr. Satomi are rare, if they exist at all. It is characters like Dr. Zaizen who truly mirror the complexity of human nature.

Through this drama, I was deeply moved by how it captured not only the external world of a prestigious hospital but also the inner worlds of the people who live and struggle within it.

最近、「白い巨塔」という日本のドラマを観ました。とても興味深く、考えさせられる作品でした。エリート大学病院の内部が生き生きと描かれており、医師たちの野心、裏で繰り広げられる政治闘争、そして生死を賭けた手術の現場で日々直面する葛藤が、リアルに伝わってきました。

登場人物の中では、特に財前医師に惹かれました。彼は腕の立つ外科医であり、勤勉で知的、そして野心的です。一部の人は彼を「悪役」と見なすかもしれませんが、ドラマでは彼をとても人間味のある存在として描いていました。財前医師を通して、私たちが日常で感じる葛藤――個人の野心と道徳的な妥協の間で揺れる心――が見えてきました。彼が愚かな過ちを犯し、貪欲に陥り、妻に浮気したとしても、愛人に対して彼の真摯な愛情は、非常に感動的に描かれていました。彼を見て悲しみを感じましたが、それ以上に、現実世界の縮図を見たように思います。私たちの周りには、財前医師のような人が多く存在します。

一方、里見医師は理想を体現する存在です。彼は信念を貫き、政治に関わることを拒み、真実を守るために家族もキャリアも情熱も犠牲にする覚悟を持っています。彼の姿勢は称賛に値しますが、どこか現実離れしていると感じました。このような人物は、現実にはほとんど存在しないのではないでしょうか。人間の複雑さと矛盾を映し出しているのは、むしろ財前医師のようなキャラクターだと思います。

このドラマを通して、名門病院の華やかな表側だけでなく、そこで働く人々の心の内側までも丁寧に描いた作品に、深く感動しました。
